On this Fifth Sunday of Great Lent, when we commemorate Venerable Mary of Egypt, we are drawn into the profound depths of both repentance and self-sacrifice, encapsulated in the Gospel reading from Mark 10:32-45. In this passage, Jesus, traveling toward His Passion in Jerusalem, foretells the suffering and death He will endure. Yet, even as He speaks of His ultimate sacrifice, the disciples, particularly James and John, display a human desire for power and glory, asking for positions of honor in His Kingdom. Their request stands in stark contrast to the path that Christ Himself must walk – a path of humility, suffering, and service.

In His response, Christ challenges them – and all of us – by redefining what it means to be great in His Kingdom. The world, with its pursuit of power and prestige, offers a distorted view of greatness, one that is often grounded in dominance and control. But in the eyes of Christ, greatness is found in service, in laying down one's life for the sake of others, and in embodying the humility of the Son of Man, who did not come to be served, but to serve.

As Orthodox Christians in the 21st century, this passage speaks deeply to our daily struggles with pride, self-interest, and the temptation to seek power and recognition. We live in a world that often values achievement and status, encouraging us to climb the social ladder, sometimes at the expense of others. Yet Christ, in His divine wisdom, calls us to a higher standard – to embrace the way of the cross, where true greatness is found not in being served, but in self-sacrificial love for others.

The life of Venerable Mary of Egypt, commemorated today, is a living testament to this Gospel. A woman who once lived a life of indulgence and pride, Mary turned away from all earthly desires and sought only Christ, the ultimate model of humility and servanthood. She became a true disciple by embracing the radical call of the Gospel, not seeking personal glory, but living out the humility and repentance that lead to true greatness in the eyes of God.

In reflecting on Mary’s life and the teachings of Christ in the Gospel, we are invited to examine our own hearts. Do we seek greatness in the eyes of the world, or do we long for the greatness found in humility, service, and sacrificial love? As we continue our journey through Great Lent, let us heed the call to drink from the cup of Christ’s suffering, to follow His example of service, and to be transformed by the power of His love. In doing so, we draw closer to the true glory of His Kingdom, a glory that is revealed not through domination, but through humility and selfless love. May we, like St. Mary of Egypt, be willing to leave behind all that is worldly in order to find our true worth in Christ alone.

У своїй відповіді Христос кидає виклик їм – і всім нам – переписуючи розуміння того, що означає бути великим у Його Царстві. Світ, прагнучи влади та престижу, пропонує спотворене уявлення про велич, що часто грунтується на домінуванні та контролі. Але в очах Христа велич полягає в служінні, у відданні життя заради інших, у втіленні смирення Сина Людського, який не прийшов, щоб Йому служили, а щоб служити.

Як православні християни 21 століття, ми чуємо в цьому уривку глибокий відгук наших щоденних боротьбів з гордістю, егоїзмом та спокусою шукати владу й визнання. Ми живемо в світі, де часто цінуються досягнення та статус, що заохочує нас підніматися соціальною сходинкою, іноді за рахунок інших. Але Христос, в Своїй божественній мудрості, закликає нас до вищого стандарту – прийняти шлях хреста, де справжня велич полягає не в тому, щоб бути обслуговуваним, а в самопожертвеній любові до інших.

Життя Преподобної Марії Єгипетської, яку вшановуємо сьогодні, є живим свідченням цього Євангелія. Жінка, що колись жила життям насолоди та гордості, Марія відвернулася від усіх земних бажань і шукала лише Христа, який є найвищим прикладом смирення та служіння. Вона стала справжньою ученицею, прийнявши радикальний заклик Євангелія, не шукаючи особистої слави, а живучи смиренням і покаянням, що веде до справжньої величі в очах Бога.

Розмірковуючи про життя Марії та навчання Христа в Євангелії, ми запрошені звернути погляд на наші власні серця. Чи шукаємо ми велич у очах світу, чи прагнемо до величі, що знаходиться в смиренні, служінні та самопожертвеній любові? Продовжуючи наш шлях через Великий піст, давайте прислухаємося до заклику пити з чаші страждань Христа, слідувати Його прикладу служіння та бути змінені силою Його любові. Таким чином, ми наближаємося до справжньої слави Його Царства, слави, що виявляється не через панування, а через смирення та безкорисливу любов. Нехай ми, як св. Марія Єгипетська, будемо готові залишити все земне, щоб знайти нашу справжню цінність лише в Христі.
